OPPONENTS of Trident will gather in Peebles tomorrow to protest the renewal of Britain’s controversial nuclear weapon system.

At 12 noon on Saturday, those against Britain’s ownership of nuclear weapons will gather at 14 High Street (the old Help the Aged shop) for the ‘Trident No More’ demonstration, two days ahead of the House of Commons vote on the renewal of the contentious weapons system.

MPs will decide on Monday whether to replace the country’s four nuclear submarines - which can each carry up to 16 ballistic nuclear missiles capable of hitting targets up to 7,500 miles away.

At any one moment, at least one submarine is actively on patrol in Britain’s waters in case an attack is required following a severe threat or strike against the UK.

If given the go ahead, the fleet will need replaced in 2028 and will cost somewhere between £15bn and £20bn.

And tomorrow, around 20 anti-Trident demonstrations will be taking place across the country.

Catriona Hamilton, who will be taking part in Peebles’ protest said: “People across Scotland will brace for yet another decision by Westminster politicians to be imposed on us.

"It must be challenged and not swept away from public scrutiny.”
