AN Innerleithen motorist has been found guilty after a trial of causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving following a road accident in the Borders two years ago.

Seventy five year old Carl Lane sustained serious spinal injuries after the collision with a Volvo XC90 on the A72 road near Peebles during October 2014.

He died at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow six months later.

William Stewart, who is 54, of Mathieson Street, Innerleithen, had pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by careless driving in that he failed to see Mr Lane cycling on the roadway and collided with him.

But after a trial at Selkirk Sheriff Court, Sheriff Valerie Johnston found him guilty..

Stewart was fined £650 and had five penalty points endorsed on his licence.

More than 20 witnesses had been cited to give evidence in the long running trial.

Today (Friday) was set aside for closing submissions from the Crown and the defence before the sheriff delivered her guilty verdict.

Mr Lane from Peebles was a retired RAF flight lieutenant and president of Peebles Cycling Club.

The accident happened on the A72 road at Eshiels near Peebles on October 27, 2014.
