STAFF at a Peebles bank have done their bit for charity over the festive period.

The Nationwide branch, on Peebles High Street, raised £180 for Shelter throughout December.

Shelter Scotland works to help those affected by homelessness and bad housing.

Branch manager Graeme Stickings told the Peeblesshire News: “We’ve raised money for Shelter by turning unwanted and old books into festive Christmas trees, angels and hedgehogs.

“My team and I were shocked to hear that there are up to 120,000 children are homeless at Christmas.

“We asked for a donation of £3.50, or however much people could give in exchange for one of our festive book decorations with all proceeds going to Shelter.

“We also donned our Christmas jumpers on Friday, December 16, in exchange for a personal donation to the same cause.”

“The reaction from customers and members was wonderful. They’ve said that it’s so different from other Christmas decorations they’ve seen and many have been given as unique gifts.

“We’re aware there was a few gifted to patients at Hay Lodge hospital too which a nurse has reassured us has certainly provided some Christmas cheer for the them.

“Thanks to all who donated.”
