TRAQUAIR House is to hold the biggest Easter egg hunt in the Borders on Sunday.

The Easter Egg Eggs-travaganza will see more than 5,500 mini eggs hidden in the maze and an egg scramble in the old walled garden.

There will be a range of activities on offer, including scavenger hunts with big egg prizes, spot the egg in the house competition, Easter bonnet making, musical instrument making and face painting.

There will also be an opportunity to decorate your own eggs, which have been donated by Glenrath, and you can take part in the communal decoration of the gigantic six-foot egg.

Organiser Catherine Maxwell Stuart said: “The Easter Eggstravaganza has become quite an institution at Traquair having been the first historic house to stage a mass Easter egg hunt in the Scottish Borders way back in 1989.

“As the maze had only recently been planted, we had eggs hidden all over the grounds which proved difficult to manage.

“Now, the maze is a perfect location to hide the eggs in the hedges and children absolutely love it.”

Stilt man Michael Angelo will also be entertaining the crowds and leading the Easter procession at 3pm for everyone to show off their bonnets.

There are three egg hunts planned for the under 10s.

At 1.30pm the first hunt will be for five and six-year-olds in the maze. Then at 3.30pm there will be an under fives egg scramble in the Old Walled Garden.

At 4pm a hunt for seven to nine-year-olds will be held in the maze.

Light meals, a hog roast and home baking will also be available from the 1745 Cottage Restaurant and Traquair House is open to the public from 11am – 5pm.

Admission is £6 for adults; £5 for children/concessions and under fives go free. House entry is additional.
