PEEBLES are to host a range of events to mark Christian Aid Week.

Christian Aid Week is not just about giving – there will also be lots of opportunities to shop for bargains!

From Monday to Friday, May 15 to 19, 10am-noon, a second-hand book stall running alongside the daily coffee mornings in St Andrews Leckie will offer a variety of reading materials.

On Thursday, May 18, on the Christian Aid Stall at Peebles Open Air Market, a range of home baking and preserves will be for sale, from 10am to 4pm.

And on Saturday, May 20, a profusion of bargains will be available at the annual plant stall in the grounds of the Leckie Memorial Church.

None of these shopping opportunities would succeed without the generosity of donors.

If you could contribute baking or preserves for the market stall, please contact Sue Isherwood on 01721 721252 or mobile 07722 931480.

Items can be delivered to the stall on the Thursday morning, or Sue can arrange uplift.

Books for the bookstall can be handed in to St Andrews Leckie Church office between 9am and 1pm from Monday, May 8 (no earlier please), or John Hutchinson can collect – phone 01721 720885 or 07914824552.

John can be contacted in the same way to arrange collection of plants; these can also be left at St Andrews Leckie Church Hall on Friday, May 19, from 5 to 7pm, or on Saturday, May 20, before 10am.

Please label plants with name and / or brief description, e.g., “About 30cm tall with red flowers late summer”.

Other events will be highlighted in next week’s Peeblesshire News (these will include the quiz night on Wednesday, May 17 – start getting your team together now!).

Supporting Christian Aid in any of these ways enables it to continue providing vital help to people in need, regardless of their religion, ethnicity or nationality.

During Christian Aid Week:

  • Every cup of coffee bought at the coffee mornings
  • Every book bought from the second-hand bookstall
  • The entry fee from every team in the Quiz on Wednesday evening
  • Every cake and pot of jam purchased at the market stall on Thursday
  • All the cash thrown into bag-packers' buckets, in Sainsbury’s on Thursday and Tesco on Friday
  • Every bit of greenery bought at the plant stall on Saturday, and
  • Every red envelope in the house-to-house collection returned with a donation...will make a difference to someone’s life.

Details of all events will be posted on a noticeboard outside St Andrew’s Leckie Church.
