TWO Borders schools have been declared joint winners for the first time in the history of an annual chess competition.

Glendinning Terrace Primary in Galashiels, and St Ronan’s Primary in Innerleithen were announced joint winners of the region’s primary schools chess competition in Galashiels last week.

A total of 20 teams representing Balmoral, Clovenfords, Denholm, Earlston, Ednam, Glendinning Terrace, Kingsland, Knowepark, Langlee, Melrose, St Boswells, St Josephs, St Margarets, St Peters, St Ronan’s, Stirches, Reston, Trinity, West Linton and Westruther primary schools gathered in the town’s Volunteer Hall to take part.

Adjudication was overseen by George Birbeck and Atholl Innes with support from John Mitchell and Ian Thomson.

Special invited guest, Craig Pritchett from Dunbar, proved to be a popular visitor with the pupils.

An International Master since 1976 and Scottish Champion on two occasions, he watched the proceedings with great interest and was impressed with the commitment and focus of the players.

In a fiercely fought final that saw last year’s champions, Glendinning go head to head with St Ronan’s, the outcome was too close to call and a draw was declared for the first time in the history of the competition.

Donna Manson from Scottish Borders Council, said: “Its popularity has meant that a bigger venue had to be found this year, with ever increasing numbers of pupils discovering the many benefits that the game can bring in terms of developing concentration skills, improving mental agility and being part of a highly enjoyable and sociable activity.

“We were particularly delighted to receive a request from two younger players from Glendinning and Reston who were keen to be part of the fun.

"Both in P2 at their respective schools, they not only had the chance to test their skills against each other but had the added honour of receiving tuition from an International Master, an experience I am sure they will remember for some time to come.

“What an outstanding performance from Glendinning and St Ronan’s though, with both teams showing considerable skill and tenacity. They should be extremely proud of their achievement and to be sharing the winner’s trophy with their worthy opponents.

“As always, our thanks go to everyone involved in organising and supporting this event.”
