JOBCENTRE bosses in the Borders believe a recent rise in local unemployment is only a blip.

During March the number of unemployment benefits claimants rose slightly from the previous months to 1150.

But with around 40 new jobs being created in Hawick this month with the opening of a new distillery and also a new Aldi as well as several courses to help people back to work, local Jobcentre managers are confident numbers will drop.

Marjorie Russell, who is the Borders customer service leader, told us: "The March claimant count for Scottish Borders has increased slightly over the last quarter, reflecting the national picture, but over the last 12 months our claimant count has reduced by 11.1 percent and by 48 percent compared to five years ago.

"Having identified we have an increased number of over-50s customers who are long term unemployed and requiring additional support to get them back into work we have procured a bespoke training course, which started this week in the Hawick area.

"The course is for 12 customers and is targeted at supporting our customers move closer to the labour market.

"Further funding to run courses in Galashiels and Eyemouth is also being progressed."

Next week Galashiels Jobcentre is hosting a Disability Confident event in a bid to open up more opportunities for unemployed people with disabilities.

MP John Lamont will deliver a keynote address with further talks from employees with disabilities.

Ms Russell added: "The purpose of the event is to encourage local employers to consider employing more people with disabilities or health conditions in line with the Governments Welfare Reform Agenda.

"There will be a range of local providers with stands on the day, demonstrating what further support and information is available for employers."
