A 38-year-old man has appeared in private at Jedburgh Sheriff Court accused of wilful fire-raising.
Pieter Lens is accused of starting the blaze at a house in the School Brae area of Peebles last Tuesday evening.
He also faces a total of nine other charges which include theft, assault, threatening or abusive behaviour, breaching bail and motoring offences.
Lens of no fixed abode made no plea and the case was continued for further examination.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear again in court this Thursday Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said four appliances attended the scene at around 7.40pm last Tuesday to put out the fire.
They reported no casualties from the incident.
