THE Fleming Queen is crowned today (June 17) after what has already been an amazing Biggar Gala Week 2023.

Last weekend the town experienced a ride out day and sashing ceremony unlike those in recent years.

Crowds gathered on Sunday, June 11 to watch as Biggar’s principals and those from surrounding towns and villages, including West Linton and Peebles, paraded down the High Street.

Although a burst of rain fell on Biggar in the morning, Sunday turned out to be one of the warmest ride out and sashing days in memory.

The sun shone brightly on the town as Fleming Queen elect Mia Leitch received her sash from 2022 Fleming Queen Kelsie Brotherstone.

Mia then bestowed the Cornet Elect sash on Craig McDonald before Rab Ramsay proposed the Safe Oot, Safe In.

A commemorative Rosebowl was presented by Mia to Sashing Lady Maisie Jackson.

Following the sashing, riders joined the Riding of the Marches.

The recent heatwave passing through the area caused a number of riders to withdraw from Sunday’s ride out due to injuries to their horses caused by dry ground.

Despite the reduced numbers, a total of 60 riders enjoyed the day.

The ride out was led by Cornet Euan who was joined by past principals, including 2020-22 Cornet Michael Allen, as well as Cornet Elect Craig.

Gala Day (today) marks the end of Gala Week, and will feature the annual fancy dress parade and crowning of Fleming Queen elect Mia alongside her court.
