A GROUP of volunteers gave up their Sunday morning to litter pick in Peebles as part of an annual spring clean.

Peebles Community Council member Allan Mackenzie organised the effort which enhances the environment “ready for the visitor season”.

More than 30 people, including Tweeddale East councillors Julie Pirone and Robin Tatler, donned hi-viz tops and wielded litter pickers during the event radiating outwards from Kingsmeadows Car Park.

A PCC spokesperson said that about 50 bags, including assorted detritus such as wheel hubs, assorted sheets of plastic and wire were collected.

The spokesperson said: “We were very lucky with the weather and the volunteers included representatives from the Callants, the Gutterbluids and Peebles Business and Retailers Association.

“We would like to thank Campbell Johnstone of Scottish Borders Council for all his support.”

More and more people are taking a role in litter picking which used to be an area of work carried out by local councils.

Across the UK research has shown at least 150,000 people litter pick each week and there are 1,500 registered litter-picking groups.
