A TALENTED teenager from Peeblesshire has snapped up a prize at a national photography awards ceremony.

Gabriela Hamza, who is a regular contributor to the Peeblesshire News Camera Club, was "thrilled" to be named Junior Scottish Nature Photographer of the Year 2023 at the Scottish Nature Photography Awards.

Thirteen-year-old Gabriela's photo of a lone poppy caught the eye of judges and was chosen as the top snap from all of the entries.

Judge Eilidh Cameron said: “It was a tough decision to pick the winner in this category with so many stunning entries.

"Gabriela's photo caught our attention, not just for its beauty but also for the artistic vision behind it.”

Her winning photo, titled 'Odd One Out', focused on a single red poppy surrounded by yellow wildflowers, photographed through a metal fence.

On her impressive win, Gabriela said: "I was thrilled and really happy to find out that my photo had been picked by the judges as the winner.

"I took Odd One Out on a summer evening walk in my local park in the Scottish Borders.

"The lone red poppy was surrounded by a big group of yellow flowers, and it just caught my eye.

"I loved the way that the poppy was highlighted in this picture and framed by the old fence.

"I always really enjoy late-evening walks in the summer because the light is beautiful and you never know what you might see!"
