THE amount of burials in the Borders has dropped to a 21st century low.
But the region’s cemeteries are still slowly running out of room.
Of the 149 local-authority maintained graveyards 54 are already full with a further 10 having less than a decade’s capacity left.
A total of nine burial grounds have an estimated 10 to 15 years left before they will be full.
And 74 are expected to take more than 15 years until they will be at capacity. During 2013 there 713 burials in the Borders - down from 745 the previous year. During 2009 a total of 831 funerals took place in local cemeteries.
