LONG-RUNNING fears about road safety in a Peeblesshire village are to be raised with councillors and officials this week.

Eddleston community councillors are meeting Scottish Borders Council officials to survey the situation and discuss how to alleviate concerns.

The safe crossing of the A703 for pedestrians has been identified as a priority for action by community councillors.

Parents of young children, bus users and residents with impaired mobility have all raised concerns about the impact of traffic speeds on the time available to cross the road.

Many feel that they are taking their life in their hands, a situation made worse by the lack of safe points to stop midway across. For individuals who are also reliant on bus services, the positioning of the bus stop close to a blind bend in the road is another problematic factor.

Community council chairman James Taylor said: “Road safety and traffic speeds in the village have been long standing concerns for Eddleston residents.

“Our November meeting heard from a village resident who is experiencing considerable difficulties crossing the road safely and we were keen to take action.

“We have been delighted with the speed of the response from local councillors and SBC officials and hope they will agree to consider measures to assist with safe road crossing.”
