SEVERAL measures are being investigated to slow down motorists on the A72 on the approach to Innerleithen from the west after a spate of accidents.

Innerleithen Community Council is especially concerned about the danger to pedestrians where the road joins the multi-purpose path.

“We had quite a bad accident a few weeks ago and there have been quite a few over the years as well as a lot of near misses,” said community councillor George Brown.

Mr Brown is going to contact the Safety Partnership to explore the possibility of installing a “reduce speed now” sign.

He had suggested extending the 30mph speed limit further out of the town but Councillor Gavin Logan said Scottish Government regulations did not permit that.

“It’s a fact of life that traffic is getting faster and faster and we have already tried to have the 30mph limit extended but it seems it’s not allowed,” he said.

Other ideas include putting up extra signage on the approach, chevrons on the bend, speed feedback interactive signs and introducing a 40mph limit leading up to the 30mph zone.
