TWO men were detained after immigration officers swooped on a convenience store in Innerleithen.

The Village Store in the town’s High Street, which is home to the local post office, was closed following the raid.

Home Office Immigration Officers, acting on a tip-off, arrested two men of Pakistani origin, aged 32 and 36, on suspicion that they were working in the UK illegally.

Ian Fenton, a spokesman for the Home Office Immigration & Borders, said: “The Village Store will be served a notice warning that a financial penalty of up to £20,000 per illegal worker found will be imposed, unless evidence is provided that legally required pre-employment checks were carried out. This is a potential total of £40,000.”
