A PEEBLES pub has won an award for its luxurious lavs.

The Cross Keys in Northgate has been granted a platinum star rating by inspectors in the Loo of the Year Awards – the highest accolade possible.

The achievement is aimed to highlight the improving standards of 'away from home' toilets across the UK and the platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer "exceptional toilets".

Craig Henrys, the manager of the Wetherspoon pub told the Peeblesshire News: "I am delighted with the award. Staff at the pub ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors."

Examiners make hundreds of unexpected visits around the country and grade the loos from bronze to gold, with unacceptable services not graded at all.

The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.

Mike Bone, the Loo of the Year Awards 2016 managing director, said: "The toilets at The Cross Keys have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.

"The pub richly deserves its platinum award – the highest individual award the judges can deliver."
