THE winners of a local writing competition have been announced.

The Write Lines, run by the Peebles Arts Festival and funded by Peebles Creative Place 2014, was aimed at secondary school pupils in two categories, S1-S3 and S4-S6.

Those successful attended a lunch in the Eastgate Studio on August 23 and received their prizes from Allan Wilson, a noted author and performer who is also a teacher in Glasgow.

Three of the winners and runners up - Jordi Steel, Lucy Olivia Lauder and Anna Macgorum - were able to attend, while Coralle Panrucker was unavailable.

After a delicious buffet, during which Allan spoke to each author at length, the stories were read out to the public who attended Allan’s performance afterwards. Each of the stories demonstrated great confidence, ability with language and driving imagination and were a credit to the writers.

Allan gave an entertaining account of his writing career and a confidence-boosting critique of the competition entries before finishing the event with a participatory exercise involving the members of the public present writing their own stories!

Allan rounded up the event by saying how encouraging the results of the competition had been and how well the future of local creative writing in the Borders looked. Above all, he exhorted every author, or would be author, to keep writing.
