PLANS have been unveiled for the creation of a memorial woodland to be created at a beauty spot near Peebles.

Wemyss and March Estates wants to turn over a grazing field to allow families to bury the ashes of loved ones before planting a selected tree.

In time it is hoped that 2.5 hectare site will be eventually populated by various species of trees.

The estate already owns a car park adjacent to the site at Eddleton Farm.

A spokesman said: “The Memorial Garden/Woodland concept will involve individuals or families purchasing a small tree planting area that will allow the placing of ashes in the planting hole before the sapling tree is then placed for future growth.

“The proposed memorial garden affords views to the north and east over Peebles and the hills beyond. It is a very attractive location and entirely appropriate for the proposed use.” If the plans are successful, a log of whose ashes are buried where will be kept by managers of the woodland.

It is also planned to place benches around the site.

The full change-of-use application will be considered by Scottish Borders Council over the coming weeks.
