INVESTIGATIONS are set to be launched into why a pedestrian crossing used regularly by young children is constantly subjected to flooding.

Teachers at Kingsland Primary School in Peebles have expressed concern that the crossing has been unusable on many occasions over the winter.

"Despite the efforts of various workmen, the problem persists and is an accident waiting to happen," said Kingsland deputy head Kenny Wilson.

"Alternative crossing points are unsatisfactory for schoolchildren, especially in wintry conditions. Also cars exiting Peebles cross over to the oncoming side of the road to avoid the pond and it can be dangerous.

"The problem seems to have arisen following the completion of drainage works in Hay Lodge Park and urgently needs to be resolved."

Councillor Keith Cockburn, who represents the area on Scottish Borders Council, promised to make urgent inquiries to find out was causing the problems.

"Nobody has approached me to let me know about this," he said. "It is a source of concern and now that I know about it I will speak to council officers to see what they can do and how we can progress it.

"I had heard about some flooding problems a little further down the road but I certainly wasn't aware of anything at the lights.

"There used to be drainage problems at Hay Lodge when the agricultural shows were there. They had to relay the rugby pitch and we will have to see if it is anything to do with that."
