While several Borders communities have benefited from the building of multi-million pounds schools, Peebles has had to suffer with piecemeal development as the school struggle to cope with providing for 1,500 pupils from Tweeddale.

And Tweeddale West councillor Catriona Bhatia hinted that it was time for education bosses to consider providing a new self-contained facility for one of the biggest schools in the Borders.

Councillor Bhatia told members of Peebles Community Council: “There is no phased development across the whole of the school’s estate - bits have been added on here and there and it’s a mess. The quality of the education at the school defies the facilities. When you see new schools such as they have at Earlston you wonder why we can’t have something like it here.”
