THE children of Broughton Primary enjoyed a rare treat when they were visited by Roxanne from Elite Falconry and three of her favourite feathered friends.

After a busy science morning of studying food chains, prey and predators and then dissecting owl pellets, grouping their findings and reassembling the tiny bones of the owl’s prey, the Primary Sevens were joined by the whole school and they were all delighted to see the fabulous owls up close. Many of the children had the owls land on their gloved hands, closely watched by owl instructor Roxanne.

Craig Hughes, from P5, said: “This was just the best Birthday ever!” Even the P1 children got to hold a tiny owl called Mouse. Roxanne declared: “This is my favourite, he can fly really fast and he also has a bit of attitude.” Jonte Willins, in P7, said: “I have learned so much about owls today, it has been wonderful. I certainly never thought I would get so close to an owl, let alone have one land on me!” After a glorious display and an interesting question and answer session on Monday, the children waved a grateful goodbye to Roxanne and the owls.

Mrs Swinburne, the P7 class teacher, said: “What a thrill for the children of Broughton. These fascinating creatures provided a super afternoon’s entertainment. The children are all so much better informed about the lives and habits of the owl. This was quite literally a hands on experience and one I feel sure the children will remember for a long time to come.” Meanwhile, the P6s had a fantastic time at Robinwood with the P6’s at Newlands. They enjoyed all the activities and made some great new friends with the children at Newlands Primary School. Some of the activities they enjoyed most piranha pool, caving and the giant swing.

Back in Broughton, the P5/6/7 classes have been planting in the bio char raised beds in the Eco Garden in preparation for the One Planet Picnic at harvest time in September. They are continuing their experiment on the benefits of using BioChar with Jamie and Isabelle from Whitmuir Farm. The will be visiting Whitmuir Poly tunnel in June to chart progress there.

And the Enterprise Committee launched their new project this week. They are asking all pupils to make loom bands for the Summer Fair in June. Please contact a member of the committee to collect your pack to work on at home.
