TWEEDDALE Rovers were crowned as Border Amateur B Division champions with two games to spare last Saturday when they defeated Coldstream 2-0.

The victory means that they can not be caught by second placed Tweedmouth, who it has since been confirmed will join them in next season’s A Division.

Co-manager Rab Stewart took the team on his own against the Streamers with Jimmy Moffat recovering from a hip replacement and Greig Shortreed on holiday.

He said: “It feels really good to finally have the league wrapped up.

“We’ve worked hard all year and won 13 games on the bounce before having two mishaps, but to have won 14 out of 16 is a fantastic achievement.

“The aim was to get promotion. Any cups would have been a bonus and winning the league is the icing on the cake, but promotion was what we were after.”

Rovers still have two league games to play, as well as still being in the Waddell Cup.

They disappointingly lost at the final and semi-final stages of their own divisional cups, but the Waddell is open to all leagues. They face Jed Legion, one of the teams vying for the A Division title, in the quarter finals tomorrow having dispatched of another high flyer in round two.

“We are expecting a very hard game. We will go into it as underdogs but with confidence. We beat West Barns in the last round and probably played as good as we have all season," said Stewart.

He added: “Myself and the players are thoroughly looking forward to Saturday because it will be a good test of what we are going to be playing against next season."

The Kerfield Park men were relegated from the top division two seasons ago, but had been there for three years and more than held their own until a disappointing 2013/14.

Things did not go their way again last year as they attempted to bounce back – suffering several injuries and a serious back log of fixtures.

The Holland and Sherry employee explained that they would love to compete as well as they once did.

He said: “We’re happy to be there and we’ll take it as it comes.

“I think one of the years before we finished fourth or fifth which is as high as we got so if we were to get back as high as that again that would be brilliant.”
