THE Kings of the Sevens series swings into action this Saturday with the Peebles tournament at The Gytes.

Secretary Allan Beveridge wants to raise the bar this year, but admitted his club is taking a bit of a gamble.

Beveridge said the key reason for moving the event from a Sunday in April, was the prospect of better weather, after the club was dogged by misfortune in recent years.

“We have even had snow in the past,” he said. “But irrespective what happens, we will want to keep to this date in the future and see how it goes.

“I know that clubs prefer 15-a-side games at this time of year ahead of the new season, but we are hopeful that they will send strong teams as there will be prize-money up for grabs.

“We will also be hoping for a decent crowd and there will be a lot of entertainment for people as well as the rugby,” he added.

“Yes, it is a bit of gamble, but we felt that we had to try something different.

“It is also harder getting sponsors for April and then for the start of the season.”

After the sevens, the Red Arrows will make a flypast over the ground, weather permitting.
