Peebles 41

PEEBLES pulled off a remarkable late win in Aberdeen to stun the home support who must have felt the National League 3 game was in the bag after scoring a try on the hour mark to lead the Gytes side 38 - 20, only to see the Border side rally through three late touchdowns.

Club president Bob Hogarth could scarcely contain his delight at the outcome.

He said: ''I never gave up on the guys.

"I always felt we were capable of getting a result, even at 18 points down.

"Prop Corey Togia was our stand out player, but the entire pack deserved to win.''

It was in fact the all action Togia who gave the Gytes side a three minute lead when he plundered the home line after home prop Owen Jackson had been yellow carded for foul play.

Stand off Greg Raeburn slotted the conversion before adding a Peebles penalty to give his team the perfect start at 10 - 0.

But not for nothing has the Shire side become the league's top points scorers, hitting back with two tries, one of which was converted by stand off Carne Green to lead 12- 10, making for a good day for neutrals, if not defence coaches.

The try glut continued, mainly due to some poor defending by both sides.

Flanker Andy Muir raced over for a try converted by the reliable Raeburn, but it was the Woodside outfit who were the more dangerous, racing into a 31 - 17 lead with two more tries just after the hour.

Raeburn kept the visitors in the game with another penalty to make it 31 - 20 at half-time.

The second half started quietly as both teams were clearly instructed to tighten up their defences.

And it was all of 20 minutes before Shire added to its total to ease into an apparently unassailable 18 point lead, only for a Togia inspired Peebles to rise magnificently to the occasion, pushing the hapless home side back into its own half and getting their reward with three converted tries all kicked by Raeburn who had a personal tally of 21 points, including a well taken try in the mayhem of the poor home defending.

Flanker Keiran Brown also got his name on the score sheet, but it was full back Steven Hamilton who sent his team mates wild with joy in the final play of the game, crashing over to hand his team an unlikely win.

Raeburn's conversion was the icing on the cake - giving the stand off a 100 per cent record for the day, compensating in part for his last gasp miss in the Kelso game the previous week.

The win takes Peebles into seventh place in the league, boosting its confidence for Saturday's game at home to West of Scotland.
