Hillhead/Jordanhill 13

Peebles 60

Allan Beveridge a Hughenden

PEEBLES edged closer to the promotion places on Saturday with a bonus point nine-try win at Hughenden.

The free-running Pees have now gone five games without defeat.

And now site just five points behind leaders Cartha Queens Park as the half-way line approaches next month.

On Saturday they could have perhaps scored a few more points... but let's not get too greedy.

The team played well and threw the ball about with confidence, resulting in nine tries.

Coach Ewen Robbie was pleased with the victory but admitted improvements are still required. He said: "These can be funny games when you are up against a team at the bottom but we did the job.

"We still made a few mistakes but we are working hard in training to get rid of them.

"Let's not forget we have a young side, and they are improving all the time."

Hillhead took to the field with two former Peebles players - scrum half Ross Thomson and centre Scott Halliday - who both study at the university of Glasgow.

Hopefully one day they will return to Peebles when their studies are over.

From the kick off Peebles took this important match by the scruff of the neck with Greg Raeburn kicking an early penalty.

The first try was scored on 13 minutes as Willy Napier dashed in, and Raeburn added the extras for a 13 point advantage.

A deep restart from Hillhead was returned brilliantly through good handling from both the backs and forwards, eventually reaching Ross Brown who dived over for the second try.

Raeburn's conversion took Peebles to a commanding 17-0 lead.

But Hillhead responded, first through a Bradley Robbins penalty, then a try through their scrum half following an interception at half way.

Normal service was quickly resumed as Callum Anderson made a good break from his own half to offload to Andy Muir, The number eight sold an outrageous dummy as he travelled at speed to the line for Peebles' third try. Raeburn's conversion brought the score to 24-8.

Brown was yellow carded on the half hour for a deliberate knock on.

The extra man gave the home team some hope, and for the remaining 10 minutes of the half they played rugby that defied their lowly position.

After being camped on the Peebles line for a few minutes winger David Vallance scored in the corner.

Peebles began to dominate again as they played down the slight slope in the second half.

David Anderson - one of four Anderson brothers in the Peebles team - was next to get his name on the scoresheet, and it was his sibling, Callum, who he had to thank for the pass that put him in at the corner.

Just two minutes later towering winger Scott Stoddart finished off a good move by handing-off the opposing full back to touch down in the left corner.

Peebles were on top in the lineout where Calum Lekey and Ross Brown enjoyed supremacy.

And the Peebles scrum, even when the ball was put in squint, were able to provide turnovers.

The tries kept coming with Steve Hamilton, Rohan Anderson and Callum Anderson all adding touch downs. Two of the three were converted by Raeburn.

While Peebles racked up a big scoreline Hillhead never gave up, and they continued to push right to the final whistle which should be congratulated.
