PEEBLES athlete Susan Ridley has returned from the European Masters Mountain Running Championships with a silver medal.

Competing in her sixth championships, Sue produced a terrific run to finish second in the Over 50s race on the slopes above Barcelona.

Although the first and last mile of the 13.4km course was on tarmac most of the 600 metres of climbing was steep, rocky terrain.

Susan told us: "The course was stony and rutted with some technical descents mixed with some terrific forest trails meandering through the mountains of Monte Scatano.

"Starting at 8.30am, the conditions were ideal for running, and at one part of the course I almost forgot I was in a race when running on my own on an undulating and zigzag trail."

Despite coming under slight pressure on the final very steep and rocky technical descent, Susan broke away in the last two kilometres to finish second W50.

Susan had developed an eye problem just days before flying out to Spain.

She added: "I would like to thank Dr Young and Tracey in the Hay Lodge treatment room for their efficient and effective treatment."
