WEST Linton have been crowned champions at a Borders-wide primary school netball tournament.

The event, held at the Queen's Leisure Centre in Galashiels last week, was organised by Live Borders/Active Schools.

Seven teams competed in the closely fought competition – Eyemouth, Melrose, West Linton, Stow, Drumlanrig, Philiphaugh and Broomlands.

These team qualified having previously played in local tournaments.

At the end of the matches, four teams were tied on 14 points, each having won three games, drawn two and lost one.

The tournament was decided after taking the number of goals scored into account.

And in an extremely tight finish West Linton Primary School emerged victorious, one goal ahead of runners up Stow. Eyemouth took the bronze medal.

West Linton previously won the local Tweeddale competition, beating Priorsford, Kingsland, Halyrude, Broughton and St Ronan's.

The team is coached by two high school pupils from Peebles, Maya Motley and Emily Harburn, who were not able to be at the tournament to cheer the team on due to higher prelims.

A spokesperson for Tweeddale Active Schools said: “Congratulations to West Linton Primary who are this year's Borders primary netball champions!

“Well done to Stow Primary and Eyemouth Primary for taking silver and bronze medals and to all seven teams for playing their part in a very exciting, high quality competition.

“Huge thanks to Maya and Emily for all their netball coaching at West Linton Primary this term.

“The work they have put in with the team was evident as the girls played some brilliant netball and worked hard for each other on their way to three wins, two draws, one narrow defeat and the Borders title for 2023.”
