SELKIRK duo Jack Stanners and Zaynah Aziz enjoyed a double victory at Dunbar on Sunday.

Stanners made a winning return to the Borders Cross Country Series by leading all the way in the junior race.

The 15-year-old finished around 50 metres ahead of Gala Harrier Nathan Cox and Kobe Stevens from Peebles.

Stanners told us: "It was great to win. Last year I finished second most weeks so it's good to go one better."

A total of 95 juniors took part in the race - leading to a delay in the start due to the increased numbers requiring to be registered.

It was another newcomer for this year, Zaynah Aziz, who won the girls race.

The 12-year-old finished an incredible 13th overall - around 30 seconds ahead of Ishbel Strathdee from Edinburgh. Isla Wightman finished third girl.

Of the many other juniors turning out for Gala Harriers, Jamie Logan, Josh Abbott, Andrew Hogg, Becki Couch, Jo Arres and Cara Hogg all finished in the places in their respective age categories.

A total of 29 Harriers took part in the senior race - but the highest placed was Fergus Johnston in fifth.

Hector Haines from Hunter Bog Trotters broke the tape - around 40 metres ahead of Carnethy's Michael Reid. Scott Pilkington from Carnethy was a further 50 metres behind in third.

Selkirk teenager John McLean finished sixth on his first run in the seniors. The 16-year-old, who won the junior race last year, was just beaten in a photo finish with Johnston.

Carnethy also featured well in the women's race with Jill Mykura beating her club-mate Charlotte Morgan to the line. Kate Jenkins from Hunter Bog Trotters finished third.

For the Harriers Mark Bryson, Fiona Dalgleish, Jenny Forbes and Karen Maxwell all posted top three places in their respective categories.

The Borders series moves onto Peebles on December 2.
