PEEBLES produced one of their poorest performances of the season despite seeing off title rivals Duns.

The high-flying Whitestone Park side have been magnificent so far this season.

And are rightly favourites to go on and win the East of Scotland First Division title.

Saturday’s victory hasn’t dented the enthusiasm, but gaffer John O’Hara admits his team will need to play a lot better.

He said: “This is probably the first time I’ve ever walked away from a match and wondered how we got the three points.

“Duns were the better team for the majority of that match but they couldn’t take their chances. We had three chances in the whole game and took two of them.

“I told the players that there are times we won’t play well and it is a good sign that we can still win.” Duns opened brightly by creating several half chances.

When their strike force did beat the defensive line they found Darren Walker in fantastic form.

Against the run of play on 26 minutes Lee Zavaroni cut inside and his shot deflected past Tansey in the Duns goal.

The Berwickshire side battled back but again found Walker equal to their efforts.

Duns almost levelled before the hour when Steve Shennan blasted against the post.

Walker made several other fantastic stops to keep Rovers in front with Jim Young and Jonathon Flockhart both defending as though their lives depended on it.

With 11 minutes remaining Chris Flockhart doubled the Peebles advantage.

Peebles finished brightly with Scott Sutherland almost grabbing an unlikely late third.

O’Hara added: “Darren Walker was fantastic for us. I was shaking my head at some of the saves he made - so were Duns.” Peebles Rovers. D Walker, L Maloney, J Young, J Flockhart, D McAleavy, L Zavaroni, C Flockhart, F Arthur, S Meikle, S Sutherland & P Murray. Subs D Ndiweni, G Rossi & D Richardson.
