Alan Boocock and Willie Baird came sixth in last week’s Belhaven Best Captains & Secretaries Championship regional qualifier on home soil at Peebles, with an excellent net 66, our first pairing to reach the final since Declan Hegarty and Hugh Gilmore performed in the inaugural event back in 2006. They travel to Crail this Tuesday to compete.

In the Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship, the country’s biggest event for club golfers, Mark Hosker and Kenny McKay will compete for Peebles in the final at The Roxburghe on 19 September after they qualified from the regional event at Newbattle. Highlights will be available on SGU TV. Good luck to all four players.

Wood celebrates doubles double - It’s been a bumper fortnight for Kevin Wood as he teamed up with two different partners to snatch victories in both the Dennis Tammi Greensomes and the David Harrison Invitation Fourball. Local farmer Wood partnered Kris Hopkirk to victory with a fine net 65 in the greensomes, before winning last Saturday’s Invitation alongside John Sterricks with an excellent stableford tally of 44 points.

The team event was won by Maureen Haig/ Senga Brown/Lilian Smith, with Senga also winning the individual Stableford prize. Elizabeth Scott wielded a red hot putter to record the fewest putts of the day.

Monday’s SLGA Silver Medal was won by Margaret Fleming 69 (16). Sheila Horsburgh won the Bronze Medal 68 (23).

Seniors News - Tom Litster and Vic Roberts were victorious in the recent Gents Seniors Open Four-Ball Competition, dovetailing well to post an unbeatable net 61. They finished a shot clear of John Logan and Les Wallace (Melrose) with John Brown and David Kaye (Prestonfield) third on net 63. The Broomieknowe pairing of Michael Alderton and William Barrell finished fourth, with Brian Robson and his partner Richard Blake (Bathgate) fifth. Well done to the organisers on another excellent Open event at Peebles.

Meanwhile in the Seniors Stableford, Neil Byers took spot with an incredible 46 points, with Bill Lord second on 40 and Stuart Duncan third on 39 points.

Junior News - More fine scoring in the latest Junior competition with Gary Whitson coming out on top with a super net 63 (34) to win Sunday’s British Legion Trophy, and with it his handicap cut to 30. Impressive golf from Gary! Dillon Rice secured the runner-up spot on net 68 (26), courtesy of the better inward half from Fearghas Lowther. This Sunday (September 7) will be the Monthly Medal Champion of Champions event, followed by the Bruce Trophy the following Sunday.

ClubGolf Ryder Cup Competition - Just three weeks ahead of The Ryder Cup coming to Scotland, Peebles ClubGolf juniors will have their own Ryder Cup style event this Sunday, September 7, between 12pm and 2pm, open to all juniors within the programme. ClubGolf is Scotland’s Ryder Cup legacy, with 40,000 school children now involved in the programme across Scotland, since its launch ten years ago as part of Scotland’s bid to secure the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

Our own ClubGolfers will have the chance to compete for prizes with five fun team challenges for all our age groups, from putting to playing the 1st hole. All parents are invited to join the kids in the Clubhouse afterwards.

Odd Shaped Ball (now sold out) - We are delighted to say that the Odd Shaped Ball collaboration between Peebles Golf Club, Junior Football and Rugby Piranhas – is now a complete sell-out of nearly 100 people, on Saturday, September 20. The event, being held at the golf club, is a fundraiser for junior sport in Peebles and promises to be great night, with the aim of beating last year’s total already reached. We hope everyone will dig that little bit deeper to bid for some fantastic auction and raffle prizes!
