And they have attracted a major sponsor, Tesco Bank, to help them continue building the region’s biggest participation sports event.

Tour O The Borders began in 2012 when just 300 riders took part.

But it has quickly grown into one of the biggest road cycling events on the Scottish calendar with numbers heading towards ten times the original figure in just four years. The backing of Tesco Bank will help the team behind the race introduce a new timed hill climb section, improved feed stations, more road signage and an event village in Peebles.

Organiser Neil Dalgleish said: “We are aiming to make this the best sportive ride in Scotland and we’re delighted that Tesco Bank’s support will help us add new elements which will make the ride even more enjoyable for all the riders as for many it’s their Tour de France for the day.” The 75-mile road cycling sportive will set off from Peebles on August 9.

The new route, which heads west from the Peebles start and finish point takes in Stobo, Tweedsmuir and St Mary’s Loch.

While organisers are excited about the new course and its challenges, they remain focused on the mass-participation nature of the ride.

Mr Dalgleish added: “It’s a great day out with some of the best climbs in the country, but it’s by no means a race or an event for just the fittest. All kinds of cyclists can enjoy superb, traffic-free riding in the company of a big, friendly group of like-minded riders.” Adele Mills, Senior Community Investment Manager at Tesco Bank added: “We recognise the importance of supporting the communities in which we serve. That is why we are proud to partner the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders, helping them to achieve their aim of becoming the best sportive in Scotland. Health and wellbeing is important to all of us and this event encourages riders of all abilities to lead happier, healthier lives by getting out on their bike and seeing some beautiful parts of the Scottish Borders.” The event is also supported by Scottish Borders Council, Endura and Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative.
