FINALS day on Saturday made history with a grandmother and grandson taking the Ladies and Gents Championship Titles. Cathy Bruce winning the title for the second year in a row and Callum Bruce becoming the youngest ever gents champion at just 16 years old. The ladies finalists were Cathy and Liz Jent. Cathy pulled away quite early and being the more experienced player proved too strong for Liz and won through 21 shots to 6.

Cathy did manage to concentrate on her game and not watch her grandson Callum winning the Gents championship. And Callum was up against a very worthy adversary, George Anderson, a previous Gents Champion. But George could not quite find his form and Callum took an early lead and maintained his good play throughout the game to win with 21 shots to 9. Other matches were the Gents A section between Adrian Cottam and Charlie Smith. Charlie’s determination saw him through and won by 21 shots to 10. The Edward Cup was played for by Helen MacLennan and May Sinclair.

This was a very tight match that lasted two and a half hours but Helen won through at the last end with 3 good bowls taking her to 21 against May’s 19. Colin Robertson and Colin Unwin played for The Caird Cup but Colin Unwin proved too strong for the other Colin and won by 21 shots to 3.

On Sunday, the Gents Handicap was between friends, George Anderson and Charlie Smith. There was some very good bowling from both players and it was a very tight game but George’s form was back and he won the match with 21 shots to Charlie’s 15. Cathy Bruce and Liz Jent were back on the green to battle it out for the Ladies Handicap.

Liz began the game with a plus 4 handicap and Cathy at 0. But what a tightly contested game, played in the best of gamesmanship to peel at 20 shots each at the 2nd last end. But it was Liz who held her nerve this time and won through to finish 21/20. Colin Unwin was also in his second final playing against our newly crowned Gents Champion, Callum Bruce. This was the Gents B section and another close game where Colin pulled ahead at 16/13. But Callum fought back and won through to finish 21 shots to Colin’s 16.

And the Holyrood Quaich finalists were last year’s Gents Champion, Mike Devenney and partner Douglas Taylor and Pat McKenzie and her partner Adrian Cottam, playing in his second final of the season. Pat and Adrian started so well staying ahead in the match but Mike and Dougie fought back with some very good bowling and won through with 22 shots to 14.

The competition for the Bob Moffat salver was played on Monday evening. Cathy Bruce was in her third final of the season and up against Rene Martin.

It was a very good match and pretty even, peeling at 12 shots. But Cathy, last year’s winner of this trophy, slowly pulled ahead and won by 21 shots to Rene’s 15.

President, Charlie Smith, congratulated the winners and thanked all in attendance.
