PLAYERS at Peebles Rugby Club are approaching a tough weekend Cup assignment with a spring in their step after a resounding victory last weekend in Glasgow.

They brushed aside Hillhead-Jordanhill 36-7 at Hughenden and are now eagerly awaiting the visit of Kelso to the Gytes tomorrow (Saturday).

“Kelso are a decent side but we’ve just enjoyed back-to-back wins and we will be going in there with a lot of confidence,” said senior director of rugby Graeme Paterson.

“That was a really good win for us at the weekend and a vital five points. Conditions were really poor but our attack and defence performed with credit.” Kelso are 15 points above Peebles in the league, so it might be regarded as something of a shock if the home side emerged victorious in the RBS Border Cup clash. But Paterson insisted: “It would not be surprising if we were able to win this game.

“It’s true that last time we played them they took us apart but we have improved so much since then. We feel we have a point to prove and want to lay down a marker for next season.

“We’ve trained well in the bad weather and our guys looked really fit last week and we should certainly have an edge over them in that respect.

“We want to make it difficult for teams to come to the Gytes. We hope to get a good supply of set-piece balls going.

“We will try to play a faster and wider game than Kelso. Their strength is in the packs but we feel we can mix it up.” With only a little rain forecast, officials are optimistic the Gytes pitch will be in good shape for the match (kick-off 2pm).
