Peebles had one or two new faces in their ranks in the shape of Nathan Mather at centre, Linton Brinck and Craig Mitchell in the forwards. All three played well as did the whole team on an afternoon when the second team had been narrowly beaten by their Selkirk counterparts 17-12 and the colts had won their league game 78-0 against Langholm.

Peebles started well at the Gytes where there was a family atmosphere with a bouncy castle and tractor rides for the children as well as a barbecue and a beer tent. The main entertainment was not Jim Currie on the Ex-Cornets’ dunk tank but on the pitch.

The Peebles forwards had been dominant in the warm up game against Murrayfield and they continued where they left off.

Right into the action was Richard Harrison who appears to have made the number seven jersey his own. Throughout the afternoon his performance was first class. He was at the forefront of attacks and his defence was resolute. It was appropriate that he scored the first of the Peebles tries. This came after good work by the forwards and Harrison was their to finish off a good handling effort. The strong wind that blew throughout the afternoon took Greg Raeburn’s conversion attempt just wide.

Meanwhile, Jim Currie was still on top of the dunk tank.

On the 15-minute mark Cameron Pye make a penetrating run in off his left wing and opened up the defence. Good hands saw the ball passed along the backs to Connor Blyth who sprinted in for the second try. Greg Raeburn added the conversion.

It was that same man Blyth who with another good turn of pace took play back into the visitors 22 only to be stopped on the line. Peebles were awarded a scrum five metres from the line and it was at this stage that referee Scott Tomlinson showed the yellow card to the visitors’ second row player. At the resultant scrum Peebles put on the 'shuv’ and Jonno Swaitek. now playing in his favoured position at number eight, scored the first of his three tries. Greg Raeburn again added the conversion.

Greenock were at this time 19 - 0 down and down to 14 men on the pitch but they were not out. They showed their intent and ran most of the possession they won and at times it was only good defence by the home team that kept them at bay. Greenock showed their mettle and their intent to attack when on the half-hour mark they were awarded a penalty on the Peebles 22 right in front of the posts. They chose to kick to the corner, won the lineout, had several rucks in attacking the Peebles line but Peebles managed to scramble the ball away to touch and safety near the 10m line.

Shortly after that Jonno Swaitek was high tackled and the referee awarded Peebles a penalty and Swaitek was lucky not to be injured as it certainly looked bad from the balcony. Greg Raeburn took the penalty and found touch 10m from the visitors’ line. Peebles lost the lineout and the ball was knocked back into the 'in goal’ area by Greenock area and the ever alert Harrison was narrowly beaten to the touch down.

From the scrum the backs got a quick ball which resulted in Callum Scott scoring between the posts. Greg Raeburn added the conversion and still Jim Currie had not been dunked into the tank!

Greenock were the next to score and it came after a nice little chip by their stand off which was followed by their centre Reid who got a kindly bounce and he sprinted in from the 22. The conversion was added.

Before half time. however, Jamie Menzies scored a good try which was converted.

In the second half further scores came at regular intervals, two from Cameron Pye, one each from Nathan Mather and Jonno Swaitek and at long last Jim Currie ended in the dunk tank.

This was a good win for Peebles but we do not know yet how good the team are. A good game against strong opposition in Gala resulted in a loss and that has been followed by two wins against teams from lower divisions so as yet Peebles have been untested against opposition from their league. That will change this weekend when Kelso will be the visitors to the Gytes, kick off 3pm.

Your support will be appreciated. The lads have played some attractive, attacking rugby which is good to watch, so here is hoping for a good start to the league campaign.
