THE Piranhas – the minis’ section of Peebles Rugby Club – travelled to Jedburgh on Sunday, September 21 for the annual Jedforest minis’ tournament at the Riverside, and came home with tournament wins at Primary 5 and Primary 7 age groups.

The P7, four team, round-robin competition saw the boys play against Selkirk Rhinos, Berwick Bulldogs and Duns Bears. With strong wins against Selkirk and Duns, the Piranhas found themselves behind, on two occasions, against Berwick.

Pressure in defence eventually paid dividends, and a two tries to one lead was overturned in the last minute for a Peebles Piranhas win, three tries to two. With the third win the boys won the tournament, adding to their victory as P6 players last season at the same venue.

The Piranhas entered two P5 squads last week: both teams featured the usual suspects, and were joined by some guest players from the P4 squad. After a rigorous selection process they were split into the evenly matched “Peebles A” and “Peebles B” teams.

Peebles A started strongly, defeating a combative Duns side before meeting their Peebles B counterparts for a well matched bout, only narrowly coming through as winners. Peebles B lost by one try to Selkirk in a close match which featured some excellent running and tackling and ended their day with a well-merited win over Duns. Peebles A then went into their final game against Selkirk, running out as winners which clinched them the well-deserved trophy.

Well done to all of the boys who played and especially to those who were making the step up in age groups, they all showed great skills and it was hard to tell that this is their first season of contact rugby.

A big thank you to Jedforest Minis for their hospitality, and the Piranha parents for their great support and oranges!
