DAVID Hughes Dance tours work of an international quality from its Edinburgh base. The company revisits work by mentors of its artistic director David Hughes, commissions new productions and collaborates with high profile dancers and chorographers including Christopher Bruce and Matthew Bourne. David Hughes Dance is determined to stimulate fans of dance by making accessible/entertaining work.

Soft Centre – choreographed by Lucy Guerin. This duet originally featured Mikhail Baryshnikov, and was only performed a handful of times. Soft Centre rejects the sentimental clichés that often describe male/female relationships in dance. But embedded in the abstract electronic music score is a burst of lush, romantic music, which belies the detached objectivity of the two dancers.

Rikud – choreographed by Liat Dror and Nir Ben Gal. Rikud is the Hebrew word for dance and the work features six dancers who investigate – in an irreverent and often comic style – the line between performing and preparing to perform. From morning training through endless coaching, rehearsing ... the pain of muscles and joints and the joy of using physical abilities ... the desire to triumph despite limitations, the emptiness after the performance.

4:Freeze-Frame – choreographed by Rafael Bonachela, features all of Bonachela’s trademark moves - arms like unsheathed blades; high, pouncing leg work; duets that tangle, splinter and coil argumentatively. Yet even as the work’s energy contracts and expands extravagantly, it is heading somewhere. The work has a slow-burning build-up that takes it from early, considered tenderness to a full-on quartet of blistering energies.
