HE has made his name singing all over the world. But he now calls the Borders his home.

Scottish singer-songwriter Archie Fisher has announced he will perform at the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles on Saturday, May 3.

It has been billed as a curtainraiser for the Innerleithen Music Festival, which will return on August 15 to 17.

Archie is a master guitarist and well known for a 27-year tenure as the host of BBC Radio Scotland’s award-winning “Travelling Folk” show.

Recognised for his contributions to Scottish folk music, he was inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame and in 2006 was awarded an MBE for services to traditional music.

Archie was born in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three professional singers, Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher. He has now made his home in the Borders, a decision no doubt helped by his love of horses.

Robin Dempsey, one of the concert organisers, told the Peeblesshire News: “Archie Fisher has a worldwide following and has been at the forefront of Scottish folk music since his leading role in the folk revival of the 1960s. He’s been an inspiration to many a budding musician, and it’s a real pleasure to bring him to the Eastgate.” Opening the concert are lively Scots folk band Deleerit - Scots for going mad!. Although its members Hendry White, Alister Rae and Gordon ‘The Prof’ Deans, are well-known local musicians, most of their gigs are elsewhere in Scotland, so it’s a rare opportunity to enjoy them playing on their native heath.

Tickets are £12, with discounts for Friends of the Eastgate, students, registered disabled and children. They’re available online at www.eastgatearts.com, directly from the Eastgate (01721 725777) and in person from Scotlight in Innerleithen.
