LOCAL MSP Christine Grahame is welcoming comments by the trustees of the Great Tapestry of Scotland who have said an alternative venue in Galashiels for its permanent home could be a good solution.

It emerged last week that the giant artwork could be housed in Galashiels as an alternative to the controversial plans for a purpose-built centre in Tweedbank.

Ms Grahame, who raised her concerns over the Tweedbank proposals with the Scottish Government in January, is encouraged by the comments and continues to press the case for the tapestry to be housed in Galashiels.

She said: “I am delighted that Alastair Moffat, the Chairman of the Trustees, has said the move to Galashiels could be a good solution. I spoke with him about the project in February and expressed my concerns about the flaws in the business case for Tweedbank as a venue and it pleases me that he and the trustees now seem to be seriously considering Galashiels.

“I am very much in favour of this potentially major tourist attraction coming to the region and it is clear to me that Galashiels would be a far better prospect to boost the local economy.”

A detailed report on the Galashiels location will go to Scottish Borders Council in July following a private briefing at the end of this month. Buildings became available in Galashiels recently and Mr Moffat has commented that it is a possibility which needs to be examined.

Ms Grahame said: “I look forward to hearing from the council about this possible new venue which I understand is being examined closely. I hope if it is a good prospect all those involved with bringing the tapestry to the Borders will agree that it is the best option and will have the maximum economic benefit for the whole area.”
