GARDENING has been added to the curriculum at Kingsland Primary School following a makeover from a local hotel's handyman.

The Barony Castle Hotel launched a community support project at the start of this year to benefit the region's local primary schools.

Donations of books and musical equipment have already been made to pupils in the area.

And last month it was the turn of Kingsland Primary to have an area of playground turned into a small garden.

Chalky from the Barony Castle team helped clear an area of ground to create bedding areas.

Barony Castle also provided planters to help the green-fingered pupils get started.

Karen Jaques, who is a sales and marketing consultant at the 72-bedroom hotel, told us: "We contacted six schools in the area to offer funds to buy resources of their choice.

"Kingsland Primary chose to have our maintenance team develop an area of the playground and turn it into a small garden area for the children to plant and grow fruit and vegetables."

Local voluntary organisation Peebles Can will now help the pupils develop the new garden over the coming months as well as provide future support.
