A MOTORIST from Peebles who was almost five times the legal alcohol limit has been banned from the road for 18 months at Selkirk Sheriff Court.

Cameron King, 23, pleaded guilty to driving in March Street, Peebles, on March 24 with a breath/alcohol count of 101 microgrammes - the legal limit being 22.

Graham Fraser, prosecuting, said residents were woken up by the sound of a car colliding with a parked vehicle at 1.40am..

Police officers found the abandoned car in which the airbags had been deployed.

King of George Street was later found at his mother's house and confirmed he had been the driver.

Defence lawyer Mat Patrick admitted: "There is no getting away from the fact it is a significant reading."

King, who works as a chef, was fined £350 and banned from driving for 18 months for drink driving.

He was also fined £150 for failing to stop after an accident and give his name and address.
