A RESCUE mission is under way to save a historic parish church in Peeblesshire.

Last month we reported the financial crisis threatening the future of Eddleston Parish Church.

It was feared that the village church would close for good unless it received a “substantial income boost”.

A letter highlighting the critical cash shortage and an appeal for support was sent out to the worshipping community.

The prayers of parishioners appear to have been answered with locals rallying together to secure the future of the much-loved church.

Speaking to the Peeblesshire News this week, Session Clerk Lorraine Mulholland said: “I think there is a feeling of disbelief but also support from people within the parish, both financial and otherwise, not necessarily churchgoers themselves, who feel the church forms an important part of our community and are keen to help out in any way they can to retain a church presence.

“The Kirk Session has already had discussions with interested individuals which have proved very fruitful and are set to continue.”

Locals are being invited to take part in a sponsored walk next Sunday from Eddleston to Peebles Parish which has already gathered over £300 in the collection pot.

The church hopes to exceed £500 which will go towards costs of maintaining the building.

Lorraine added: “I feel very positive that there is a future for the church in Eddleston but it will only happen with regular giving and support.”

The sponsored walk is on Sunday, June 23, setting off from Eddleston Church at 1pm. For details contact Jenny Greaves jhmgreaves@yahoo.co.uk or Lorraine Mulholland lorajazz@aol.com
