ENVIRONMENTAL activists in Peebles have turned to art in a bid to get their message across.

The newly-formed local Extinction Rebellion group took to Tweed Green at the weekend.

But rather than blocking traffic, the campaigners created two large displays using autumnal leaves.

The idea for the picturesque protest came from local artist Katy Swift and Extinction Rebellion member Catriona Hamilton.

Catriona said: "The two large leafy displays on Tweed Green were of a sugar skull and an XR symbol in the style of environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy.

"Thanks to everyone who came along to help, it was a great afternoon, fortunately the wind stayed away and it was really lovely when passers by came up to take photos and join us for a chat.”

As well as the Tweed Green artworks event, the group also organised a children’s art workshop at the nearby Peebles Community Centre.

Young artists were encouraged to make pine cone hedgehogs, posters and egg box creatures as well as creating environmental art.

Catriona added: “Art has such an important part to play in thinking about the climate and ecological crisis, it’s a healthy way to express feelings through art you create, in a safe and fun way."

The children’s artwork will be displayed at the Eastgate Theatre as part of the Extinction Rebellion exhibition, which runs until November 19.

The next Introduction to Extinction Rebellion meeting in Peebles will be held is The Hub from 7.30pm on Tuesday (November 12).
