BIKERS from across the region headed to the Dryburgh Hotel last week to celebrate the 100th year of the Royal British Legion.
The gathering was part of the ‘Running the Standard’ event which is run by bikers Sue and Matt Merry.
It sees the mother and son team take a miniature Royal British Legion Riders Branch Standard to every county in Great Britain each year.
The event, which runs throughout July, started in Plymouth and covers 3,000 miles – spanning 80 counties and three countries.
It culminates at the Riders National Rally.
The Legion Standard was originally designed in 1922 by Colonel E C Heath, the first general secretary of the British Legion and was first paraded as the National Standard at the Annual Conference Cenotaph Service in 1924 on Whit Sunday.
It is looked upon as the rallying point of every branch and as a constant symbolic reminder of the Legion’s motto “Service not Self”.
