A GROUP of Spanish environmentalists will be passing through the Borders as part of their walk from Portsmouth to Glasgow for the COP26 conference next month.

Having left Bilbao in northern Spain at the end of last month, the 10 activists set off on foot from Hampshire on October 1 on their 29-day trek to the gathering in Glasgow.

They will be covering almost 1,000km (Bilbao to Glasgow), and look to walk an average of 30km each day.

The 'Marcha a Glasgow' group has invited local activists along their route to join them to support their campaign and to discuss climate issues.

On October 24 the group will cross the England-Scotland border and will stop in Kelso – their first Scottish stop.

The Borders COP26 Coalition – the collection of members of various environmental groups from across the region – will join the 'marchistas'.

A spokesperson for the coalition said: "Borders members of various groups, which form the COP26 Coalition, will be showing support and solidarity by walking with them that day, and want to make a big welcome for them at their first Scottish stop, at Kelso."

The coalition is also inviting members of the public to join them on the evening of October 24 to meet with their Spanish counterparts to "show our government that they care passionately about this crisis and be part of a positive worldwide movement for change".
