A MOTORIST who was filmed on a mobile phone driving at 110mph on the A1 in the Borders has been banned from the road for 12 months at Jedburgh Sheriff Court.

Twenty-year-old Blayn Scott, of Restoration Cottages, Scremerston, Berwick-upon-Tweed, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving by driving at excessive speed on the A1 at Lamberton on August 23 last year.

Depute fiscal Fiona Hamilton told Jedburgh Sheriff Court there was an unusual background to the offence coming to light.

She explained how police officers were investigating another road traffic matter involving Scott, a technician involved in rope access to make safe road edges, and seized his mobile phone and came across a video filmed by someone showing Scott driving at 110mph.

Ms Hamilton said: "The video lasts five seconds. The video is on his phone."

Scott's lawyer said: "He accelerated up to that speed and his friend videoed that speed for five seconds and then he brought the speed back down."

In addition to the 12-month ban, he was fined £500 with a £20 Victim Surcharge.

Scott was initially charged with driving a car at 144mph while recording himself with a hand held mobile device and overtaking another vehicle while doing so on the A1 at Lamberton on August 23, 2021, but a not guilty plea was accepted to that charge.
