SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) has turned to the public for help in a bid to stop “ongoing” vandalism at a play park.

The £300k facility in Peebles’ Victoria Park was opened in May last year.

But the park has experienced a spate of vandalism over recent months, including large amounts of graffiti, equipment being broken and ‘persistent’ littering.

Information is being sought from the public regarding the problem.

Tweeddale East councillor Julie Pirone, executive member for community & culture, said: “The play park within Victoria Park, Peebles, was only recently opened in 2021 after thousands of pounds of investment into the facility and is well-loved by the children and families who use it.

“It’s extremely disappointing and sad to be made aware of ongoing vandalism at the play park by a small minority of people. Equipment has been deliberately broken and offensive graffiti sprayed on multiple occasions and it needs to stop.

“By vandalising our play equipment, it means it can’t be used by others for the purpose it was intended for and it is effectively vandalising our own area.”

Community Action Teams (CAT) will now focus their attention on this area with additional patrols scheduled to monitor activity at the park, according to SBC.

Ms Pirone, who is also the chair of the CAT Strategic Oversight Group, added: “This park was designed to provide a safe and welcoming facility for all young people in the community to enjoy and the recent incidents are completely unacceptable.

“It costs money to replace equipment and that cash could be spent elsewhere.

“We are seeking information in relation to this vandalism and would urge anyone who can help to come forward. Please report anything you see to police.”
