GUESTS at a charity event will be the first to sample a Borders distillery’s new liqueur – all while raising money for a worthy cause.

Selkirk Distillers have supported the MS Society in the past through the sale of its 1953 Gin.

Now the distillery is hosting the Selkirk Distillers’ Experience for MS in Glasgow.

Co-founders of the distillery, husband and wife Allan Walker and Jane Gentleman, aren’t giving away many clues about their new liqueur.

Jane said: “One wee clue is the word orange will be associated with it!”

Supporting the MS Society is important to the couple and their business after Jane was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS in 2011.

The Selkirk Distillers’ Experience for MS at The Venue at Strathclyde University will begin harpist Charlotte Sager – who lives with MS – playing as guests arrive, followed by Allan leading a tasting of some of the distillery’s gins and rum. He will also explain how the team at Selkirk Distillers hand-pick the botanicals from a range of natural resources in the Borders.

Then Allan will unveil the new MS Society Selkirk Distiller liqueur.

Jane said: “I hope the tasting event in Glasgow will help to raise awareness of MS, as well as raising funds for a dear charity close to our hearts.

“We hope to make it a fun night for everyone; a perfect night to launch our brand new MS liqueur.”

The idea of an MS Society gin came from Jane’s friend Kirsty Bennett, who was diagnosed with MS in 2009 when she was 21.

Morna Simpkins, director of MS Society Scotland, said: “Selkirk Distillers has done so much for us already and we’re delighted to be teaming up with them again during this year’s MS Awareness Week.

“More than 15,000 people in Scotland live with MS. It is relentless, painful and disabling. We’re here to make life better for people with MS, through research campaigning and support.

“Fundraising initiatives such as this one are vital to us continuing our work so we would like to thank Jane, Allan and all the team at Selkirk Distillers as well as our colleagues who are working hard to make this event possible.

“I would encourage people to book their tickets early so they don’t miss out on what is sure to be another enjoyable night.”

The Selkirk Distillers’ Experience for MS will take place on Friday, April 28 from 6-11pm. As well as the tasting, the event will feature music from Melodia, an acoustic duo from Dundee, and a raffle. Tickets are £20, or £15 for students (over 18s only).
