IRONICALLY on National Doors Open weekend, one hugely popular venue in Galashiels closed for good.

The award-winning T-4-2 café in the High Street served its last customers on Saturday (September 2), with owner Frances Hunter now concentrating on her outside catering business.

In 2008 Frances was advised against opening a café during the recession but took no heed and the business went from strength to strength, building up a loyal customer base and providing a much-needed place for friends to meet.

On an emotional day, Frances was keen to thank her family who have all helped over the past 15 years, her dedicated staff and her customers.

She said: “I feel this is the time to close after 15 years to concentrate on outside catering.

“Many people thought I was mad to be opening a coffee shop/café in 2008, just when the recession was starting to creep in, but I didn’t listen. And I have no regrets.

“We’ve done a lot in that time and become a hub of the community, particularly among the older generation who meet friends and family here. I’ve even had people in tears at the thought of us closing. So it’s been quite emotional.

“I think COVID was probably the worst, however we diversified [and] put in a good few extra hours to bring afternoon teas to many households, along with ready cooked meals.

“I have been very lucky to have had the support from my family and my work family past and present – they have all been amazing.

“My daughter Pru was here when we opened the doors and my other daughters Karen and Hannah and son Russell have also helped out. I’d also like to mention Pru’s husband, Tosh, Karen’s husband, Colin, and Russell’s wife, Claire. My granddaughter Chloe also works here and my husband Jim is chief potato peeler for the roast beef stovies, which is one of our most popular dishes along with our macaroni cheese and, of course, our cheesecakes.

“But I’ll miss the banter. Karmin has been here for 15 years and other staff include Myra, Sarah, Marion, Sky our Saturday girl, Susan, Debbie, Theresa, Pamela and Ben. Hopefully I’ve not missed anyone. I’d just like to say a huge thank you to them all.

"And I’m so glad to say that all the girls have got jobs to go to which was a big worry, and I wish them all the best. So onwards and upwards.”

Frances added: “We will be here to do afternoon teas, buffets, scone orders, cake orders, quiche, and you can message me or phone 07714239760.”
