ONGOING carriageway improvements on the A1 which were scheduled to be completed last night, Wednesday September 27 will now conclude on Tuesday October 3.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland have been carrying out the resurfacing works on the A1 Southbound, 2.5 miles south of Cockburnspath Roundabout.

The work was delayed due to adverse weather conditions but it will resume tonight Thursday September 28 and also take place tomorrow Friday September 29.

There will be no work at the weekend, but it will resume on Monday October 2 and continue on Tuesday October 3.

As a result the A1 Southbound will be closed overnight between 7.30pm and 6am on each night.

A diversion route will be signposted between Tower Farm Junction and the A1107 Junction east of Ayton, directing traffic via the A1107.

This diversion is expected to add approximately 1.2 miles and 9 minutes onto affected journeys.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times and local access for residents within the closure points will be maintained when it is safe to pass through the work area.

Relevant stakeholders have been consulted in advance to make them aware of the plans.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s South East Network Manager, said: “These surfacing improvements will help to address the defects on this section of the A1 and will greatly improve the experience for motorists.

“It is essential for safety that we close the road during these works, however we’ve arranged for the project to take place overnight to minimise the impact.

“We thank motorists and the local community in advance for their patience and understanding. We’ll do all we can to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.”

All work is weather dependent and subject to postponement or cancellation in the event of adverse conditions.
