INNERLEITHEN Golf Club members have created a cairn to honour friends who have died.

Club members and guests gathered on Sunday afternoon to witness the unveiling of the memorial cairn.

Club captain Robert Goudie and the committee decided the ideal way to honour those members who have passed away would be to have their names included in remembrance on the golf course.

The cairn was primarily constructed and designed by Keith Dunn and Scott Boak using local stone, set in a square bed of slates featuring a slate urn.

The surrounding slate carries the inscription: “Precious memories are a gift to treasure. Golfing by the Leithen, moments to savour.”

Two past members already have memorial tags in place: Noel Dashwood-Brady and Niven Simpson – “these gentlemen will be sadly missed by all”.

Offering his gratitude on completion of the cairn, Mr Goudie said: “An incredible amount of hard work by the club member organisers has seen funds raised and a project delivered under budget. The memorial cairn’s creation was only made possible thanks to the many members who contributed generously, particularly Jim Edgar and the late Niven Simpson, along with the local businesses who gave their time and products either freely or heavily discounted. These include: Alan McMath from Smith & McMath Ltd; MKM Building Supplies, Galashiels; Artstone Scotland Ltd, Walkerburn, for the inscribed slate; Colin McArthur, for the donation of the brass golfer; David Barbour, from DCB Welding Design for the metal ring; and Grant Fraser and David Maxwell, for their help in moving materials to the site.

“Thanks must also go to Keith Dunn, Scott Boak and Patrick Sheck for their hard work and generosity.”
